Is Your Supplement Vegetarian? How to Tell From the Label

VapoCept® Editorial Team · September 20, 2026

The front of a supplement bottle will happily tell you it is plant-based, natural and botanical. None of those words tell you what the capsule is made of — and for a great many products, the capsule is the only animal-derived component in the whole thing.

The Line That Answers It

On the Supplement Facts panel, below the actives, sits a line headed Other Ingredients. That is where the capsule material, flow agents, bulking agents, colours and coatings are listed. It is routinely the smallest text on the bottle and it is where this question gets settled.

Gelatin Means Animal-Derived

Gelatin is made from collagen extracted from animal skin, bone and connective tissue — usually bovine or porcine. If the Other Ingredients line says gelatin, bovine gelatin or porcine gelatin, the product is not vegetarian or vegan.

It also matters for halal and kosher requirements, where the source animal and method of slaughter both count, and where "bovine gelatin" alone does not establish compliance.

The Vegetarian Alternatives

Seeing one of these means the shell is fine. It does not automatically clear the whole product — a few other ingredients deserve a look.

Others Worth Checking

"Plant-based formula" is not the same claim as "vegetarian product." A page can honestly describe a formula of plant extracts while that formula sits inside a gelatin capsule. The statement is about the contents; the capsule is a separate question. This is rarely deceptive on purpose — but it is the gap that catches people out most often.

If You Have Already Ordered

Check the bottle first, since websites go out of date and the panel does not. If it turns out the capsule is gelatin and that does not work for you, most reputable sellers have a money-back guarantee covering opened bottles. Use it — that is precisely what it is for.

Some people open the capsule and take the contents in water or food. Whether that is acceptable to you is a personal judgement, and it is worth knowing that some capsules exist to control where in the digestive tract the contents are released.

Where VapoCept® Stands

The capsule is bovine gelatin. VapoCept® is therefore not suitable for vegetarians or vegans, and bovine gelatin on its own does not satisfy halal or kosher requirements.

We put that on the homepage, in the FAQ and on the ingredient page rather than leaving it to the back of the bottle, because finding it out after delivery is a bad experience and an avoidable one. The rest of the Other Ingredients line is magnesium stearate and microcrystalline cellulose, the latter plant-derived.

If a gelatin capsule rules the product out for you, that is a clear answer and we would rather you had it before ordering than after.
